Mi Pueblo Folklorico Contest – Official Rules and Regulations

Overview: Mi Pueblo and Ballet Folklorico de Carlos Moreno are hosting a three week, multi-region folklorico dance competition as a way to reinforce culture and celebrate traditions through dance. Our 3 weekend competition will encompass 4 regions segmented as follows: North & East Bay competing in Oakland, South Bay and Northern Peninsula squaring off in San Jose, Central Valley showing their skills in Tracy, and Central Coast dancers representing in the Salinas stomping grounds.

Duration: Starting April 11th, competitions will be held on weekends, including Saturdays and Sundays at various Mi Pueblo Stores, culminating in a grand finale at Mi Pueblo’s flagship store – Story & King Road, April 25th, the day before “Dia del Niño.” ALL EVENTS BEGIN AT 2 P.M.

Categories: The style of the various foklorico dances are very reflective of the different regions of Mexico. Mi Pueblo has referred to the USA Folklorico Association for the standard categories of regional dances to consider as follows:

  • Central Mexico (includes Michoacán, Nayarit, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, & Jalisco)
  • Veracruz
  • Southern Mexico (Includes Guerrero, Puebla, & Oaxaca)
  • Northern Mexico (Includes Sinaloa and Tamaulipas)
  • Open Category (any Latin song or Latin artist)

Age Groups: Participants eligible for this competition

  • 12 and over
  • Under 12 not eligible for competition but we are asking for participation in dance intermissions.

Prizes: The following prizes are redeemable at Casa Folklorica of Oakland.

First place:         $3,000 – in folkloric dance wardrobe

Second place:    $2,000 – in folkloric dance wardrobe

Third place:         $1,000 – in folkloric dance wardrobe

Social Media: A video of each group that does NOT advance to the grand finale will be posted on the Mi Pueblo Facebook page. The group that has the most votes between April 20th and April 23rd, 5P.M., will be selected as the People’s Choice and will partake in the grand finale along with the 4 other finalists. In the end 3 of 5 finalist groups will win!

Social Media Voting: Voting will be measured by “likes”. A Facebook Like on the official Mi Pueblo Food Center wall is considered a vote. Likes on Youtube will not be considered as part of the voting metric. Odds of winning will depend upon the number of votes received on the Mi Pueblo page. In the event of a tie, a winner will be determined by the score they received at the regional competition. No boosting software or voting fraud allowed. If voting fraud is determined, the team is disqualified and the next eligible winner is proclaimed. Winners will be contacted by Ballet Folklorico de Carlos Moreno on or about 5:30PM, Thursday, April 23rd, 2015.

Publicity Release: Except where prohibited by law, entry constitutes consent to Mi Pueblo and its’ agents (BFM) to use winner’s name, likeness, photograph, voice, opinions and/or hometown and state for promotional purposes in media, worldwide, without further payment or consideration.

Disputes: By entering the Mi Pueblo Dance Competition, you agree that exclusive jurisdiction for any dispute, claim or demand related in any way to the competition will be decided by binding arbitration. All disputes between you and Mi Pueblo of whatsoever kind or nature arising out of these Rules, shall be submitted to Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc. (“JAMS”) for binding arbitration under its rules then in effect in the San Jose, USA area, before one arbitrator to be mutually agreed upon by both parties. The parties agree to share equally in the arbitration costs incurred.
